The history of Uttar Pradesh is very ancient and interesting. In the later Vedic period it was known as Brahmarshi Desh or Madhya Desh. It was the taphobhumi of many great sages of the Vedic period, such as Bharadwaja, Gautama, Yajnavalkya, Vasistha, Vishwamitra and Valmiki. Many sacred books of Aryans were also written here. The story of two great epics of India - Ramayana and Mahabharata also seems to be based on this region.
Uttar Pradesh came into contact with two new religions - Jain and Buddhist - in the sixth century BCE. The Buddha preached his first sermon in Sarnath and started his sect and he attained nirvana in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.
Many cities in Uttar Pradesh, such as Ayodhya, Prayag, Varanasi and Mathura - had become famous centers of study. In the medieval period, Uttar Pradesh came under Muslim rule, which led to the creation of a new composite culture through the interaction of Hindu and Islamic religions. Tulsidas and Surdas, Ramanand and his Muslim disciple Kabir and many other saints contributed to the development of Hindi and other languages.
Uttar Pradesh maintained its intellectual excellence even during the British rule. The British merged the two provinces called Agra and Awadh into one which came to be called the United Provinces of Agra and Awadh. Later in 1935 it was abbreviated to the United Provinces only. After independence, in January 1950, the United Province was renamed as Uttar Pradesh.
